As walkers discover rarely explored paths of world-famous K'gari, a renowned UNESCO Heritage Site. Walkers will experience the unimaginable beauty of diverse landscapes, from the coastal bushland, through the heart of the rainforest, to pristine, white sand freshwater lakes. The walking track consists of bush trails, rainforest, sand dunes, perched dune lakes, eucalyptus woodland and coastal heaths. The hiking grade is easy to moderate. It is recommended that hikers have an average level of fitness to undertake this hike.

Itinerary

The K'gari Luxury Walk operates twice monthly during the walking season (March to October). Private walk bookings are also available for groups upon request. Scheduled walk dates are confirmed when booking, dates may vary depending on availability due to private bookings. 

  • Test

    Day 1

    Welcome day: Coastal Walk & McKenzies Jetty

      Around 7-6 km  |    2 - 3 hours |  Easy

    • Arrive at the K’gari Walking Tours office in Hervey Bay by 12pm, or opt for a complimentary pick-up. Here, you'll meet your fellow walkers and receive a warm welcome from your guides. Make sure to arrive dressed in your hiking gear, as we'll be all set for our island adventure.
    • Our journey to K’gari begins with a scenic trip on the ferry, heading to Kingfisher Bay. During the 45-minute ferry ride, keep a lookout for dolphins, sea turtles, dugongs, and, during the season, the majestic whales.
    • We'll then embark on a short walk up to a captivating lookout, where you can savor breathtaking vistas and the harmonious sounds of nature. Following this, a transfer will take you to your accommodation, where you can relish gourmet sandwiches, fresh fruit, and refreshing cold drinks while gazing at the picturesque Sandy Straits.
    • After lunch, a brief 4WD transfer will bring you to a track point near the historical site of McKenzies Jetty. Here, you'll commence your adventure with a gentle 6km walk through the forest and along the pristine beach as the afternoon sunsets.
    • Upon returning to your accommodation, unwind with your fellow walkers over delectable nibbles and a glass or two of fine wine. As the evening unfolds, you can indulge in a gourmet dinner on the veranda, offering a splendid view of the national park's lush canopy. After dinner, you'll retire for the night, ensuring a restful sleep before embarking on the second day of your adventure

     

  • Day 2

    Lake Garawongera & Valley of the Giants

     Around 10-12 km  |  Around 30-40km |   6 hours |  Easy-Moderate

    • Wake up to the embrace of comfort and tranquillity, where a hearty breakfast and a cup of tea or coffee await you on the veranda. Your day kicks off with a private 4WD transfer to the northernmost segment of the Great Walk: Lake Garawongera, the Valley of the Giants, and the surrounding areas. Please note that the exact route itinerary may vary based on tides.
    • As you journey through serene forests and ancient giants, keep a keen eye out for abundant birdlife, playful echidnas, and the native flora that graces your path. At Lake Garawongera, take a refreshing swim in the tea-tree-infused lake, followed by a fully prepared lunch thoughtfully provided by your guide.
    • You'll also descend into the enchanting Valley of the Giants, a 5km walking adventure that introduces you to some of the island's oldest and largest trees. Along the way, you'll pass stands of brush box, satiny trees, and pockets of lush rainforest, as well as open forest areas. Don't miss the opportunity to take a short 500m return stroll to the Giant Tallowwood, where the only interruptions are the cheerful chatter of birds and the gentle whispers of the treetops.
    • After your afternoon of exploration, return to your accommodations, unwind, and share stories of the day over a delightful gourmet evening meal and refreshing drinks.

     

  • Day 3

    Lake Boomanjin & Lake Benaroon

     Around 15 km  |  Around 30km |   6 hours |  Moderate

    • Your exciting day of hiking beginning with a scenic drive along the Eastern Beach to the K’gari Great Walk trailhead at Dilli Village (optional visit to Stonetool Sandblow).
    • When arrived follow the boardwalk that traverses the creek, where thriving swamp banksia, melaleucas, sedges, and coral ferns create a lush tapestry of nature. The path continues through scribbly gum woodland and open forests, leading to a brief ascent to reach the optional Wongi Sandblow viewpoint.
    • Your journey through eucalypt forest continues, ultimately leading you to the breathtaking Lake Boomanjin. As your guide prepares lunch, reward yourself with a quick swim in the lake, renowned as the largest perched lake in the world. Following lunch, take a leisurely stroll along Lake Boomanjin's north-western beach, ascending to a ridge that guides you through ever-changing landscapes, from sandy dunes to rainforests, open woodlands to brush box and blackbutt forests. The trail eventually descends to the picturesque Lake Benaroon.
    • Continue your exploration along the lake's shore, enjoying a brief forest walk amidst the majestic kauri pines, staghorn ferns, and palm lilies. Your guide will be waiting for you at the end of this journey.
    • As you return to your accommodations, take a moment to reflect on your day's adventures and treat yourself to a wine and cheese platter on the expansive deck. Unwind and savor a gourmet dinner, all while basking in the nightly spectacle of star-filled skies.

     

  • Day 4

    Lake McKenzie, Basin Lake & Central Station

     Around 10 km  |  Around 20km |   3.5-4 hours |  Moderate

    • Rise from a peaceful night's sleep to savor a delightful breakfast, preparing you for a day filled with remarkable highlights. Your adventure commences at Lake McKenzie, where you can immerse yourself in the enchanting beauty of the white sandy beach and crystal-clear blue waters, an experience that must be seen to be truly believed. Take a leisurely swim in the pristine lake before embarking on the circuit walk to Basin Lake, that leads you through enchanting blackbutt forests.
    • As you continue your journey, you'll ascend through diverse forests, eventually arriving at Central Station, a location steeped in historical significance. Here, you'll savor a well-deserved, prepared lunch by your guide. 
    • Afterward, explore the Central Station area, delving into its rich past. Walk along the boardwalk bridge, suspended above the crystal-clear waters of Wanggoolba Creek, all while serenaded by the harmonious songs of native birds. Continue to Pile Valley, where you'll be surrounded by captivating, ancient rainforests. 
    • Once you reach Pile Valley, your guide will be there to transfer you back to Kingfisher Bay. As the sun begins to set, relish a tranquil moment on the beach with a refreshing drink. The barge will take you back to Hervey Bay, providing ample time to reflect on the incredible journey you've experienced along the Kgari Great Walk.

    Please note that the provided itinerary, distances, and times are approximate and serve as a general guide. They may be subject to change based on group dynamics, walking pace, and track access. Any required changes to the itinerary will offer equally spectacular experiences, given K’gari/ Fraser Island's abundance of stunning scenery.

What to bring?

 Suitable SHOES

We will be on our feet a lot, it is important to ensure you have the following: Hiking boots that are good quality, with ankle support. Shoes (runners/trainers or comfortable shoes. Thongs/ slippers/ flip-flops.

 Clothes

We suggest the following: 2 light weight walking pants, 2 light weight walking shorts, 4 light weight t-shirts, a fleece jumper/sweater or similar, light weight rain jacket, evening clothes, for evenings/dinner & 4 hiking socks.

 swimmers & LIGHTWEIGHT Towel

After & during our days of hiking there will be opportunities to cool off in some of the most beautiful water in Australia so ensure you pack swimmers and a lightweight towel.

 Personal toiletries

Such as prescribed medicines, general medicine as approved by your Doctor ie. Aspirin, paracetamol. Insect repellent, sunscreen etc.

 Hiking Backpack

Small day hiking backpack to carry the essentials (camera, phone, swimmers, small towel, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, medication etc.) while you hike.

 Water bottle

1-liter reusable water bottle, to carry water during the day (can be filled up).

Preparing you for a once in a lifetime experience

Please read the answers to the common questions we're asked below. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch for answers to any other questions you may have:

The 4 day/3 night K'gari Luxury Walk departs twice a month and any time on demand during the hiking season (March to October). Departures are subject to a minimum number of walker participation, we need 3 - 6 people to be able to run a walk.

  • Read our full list of travel items to pack before embarking on the walk. All walkers need good quality hiking boots, preferably with ankle support. 
  • TIP: make sure you wear them in prior to the walk to avoid blisters. 
  • Hiking poles are optional but we do recommend bringing one as it can be used to help you navigate up any steep sand dunes. 
  •  light rain jacket is a must for unexpected rain during the walk. 
  • A waterproof bag for swimmers is also important so that walkers can store wet items while walking. Insect repellent is also recommended while walking. 
  • Our walks depart from Hervey Bay, Queensland and take a ferry transfer over to K'gari. 
  • The closest airport is the Hervey Bay Airport (HVB) which has direct flights to and from Brisbane and Sydney. Other transport options are available, including bus, train and car hire. We offer a complimentary private pickup from the airport or accommodation in Hervey Bay on the morning of departure. 

K'gari's diversity means that walkers go through a variety of vegetation. Tracks are generally gentle gradients, but are quite steep in some sections, Grade 3 & 4 tracks. These are bush tacks, expect normal leaf litter, etc. and unevenness of the surface. Walkers require a good level of fitness, balance and be steady on their feet. We recommend that walkers do some preparation by taking long day walks, in their local area, in and around natural spaces carrying a small day pack.

The walk has a maximum of 6 guests, we require a minimum of 3 confirmed guests to run the walk.

  • There is an age limit of 12 years and over. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. 
  • There are no upper age restrictions for walkers with suitable ability, however walkers with medical conditions should check with the operator before booking.

The climate of K'gari is subtropical, with warm daytime temperatures throughout the entire year. The winter months are from May to August, where the average temperatures are 14-25 C (57-77 degrees F). Winter is the drier month of the year and it is less likely that you will see much rainfall during walking season. If it does rain it’s generally short showers.

It is preferable to book a least 14 days in advance, however, last-minute bookings are taken subject to availability and minimum numbers being met. For bookings less than 7 days out, please call on +61 (0) 428 250 668 and we will check availability for you. We can take bookings 12 to 24 months in advance in order to plan and secure the limited places on this exclusive walk.

Yes, we offer an exclusive package for couples or groups of 4 - 6, where a group can book their own private walk. If there is a group of 4-6 then they can choose their own date subject to availability. This also allows for a tailor made itinerary according to the interest and fitness levels. For example: all hikers are passionate photographers or bird watchers, then the hike can be tailored to these desires (please note that exclusive packages have a different pricing structure, as they are classed as a private charter).

Yes, anyone staying at Waiuta Retreat is allowed to access the facilities at the resort. These include the Sand Bar and pool, the Jetty Hut, Seabells Restaurant, Resort pool, Spa etc.

Yes, we provide other hiking experiences that are not accommodated but camping.
